A colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the rectum, large bowel (colon), and the end of the small bowel (terminal ileum). It is performed using a colonoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a small camera and light on the end, which allows detailed examination of the bowel lining.

Colonoscopy is commonly used to investigate symptoms such as changes in bowel habit, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, iron deficiency, and unexplained weight loss, as well as for bowel cancer screening and surveillance. During the procedure, Dr Anthony Brownson can identify abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, or bowel cancer. Small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken, and polyps can often be removed at the same time to help prevent bowel cancer from developing.

Before the procedure, patients take a bowel preparation to cleanse the bowel and ensure the best possible view. Colonoscopies are performed under sedation to maximise comfort, and most procedures take between 30 and 60 minutes. Patients are typically able to return home the same day after a short recovery period.

As an accredited provider for the National Bowel Screening Programme, Dr Brownson is committed to delivering high-quality, safe, and patient-centred colonoscopy services in accredited endoscopy facilities.
