A gastroscopy is a procedure used to examine the lining of the upper digestive tract, including the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). It is performed using a thin, flexible camera called a gastroscope, which allows direct visual assessment of the upper gastrointestinal tract and enables biopsies to be taken when required.

Gastroscopy can help diagnose and investigate a wide range of symptoms and conditions, including reflux and heartburn, indigestion, swallowing difficulties, abdominal pain, nausea, iron deficiency and anaemia, coeliac disease, gastritis, ulcers, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Biopsies can be taken during the procedure to assess for inflammation, infection, coeliac disease, and other abnormalities.

Dr Anthony Brownson performs diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy procedures at Waitematā Endoscopy on Auckland's North Shore and in West Auckland. Procedures are carried out in accredited facilities with a strong focus on patient comfort, safety, and high-quality care. Most gastroscopies are performed under sedation and take approximately 10–20 minutes.
